L’Union fait la Force, With Unity there is Strength
Haiti became the world's first black-led republic and the first independent Caribbean state in the 19th century when it overthrew and overcame French colonial control and slavery.
While Haiti did not officially declare independence from France until January 1, 1804, Flag Day has been widely recognized since 1803, when the first independent flag was stitched together. The flag symbolizes the unity, dignity and self-sufficiency of the nation's people and rejection of its white colonizers.
Happy Flag Day to our Haitian brothers and sisters across the world!
